Dr. Baylis

Assistant Professor David Baylis holds a BS/BA degree in Geography and Political Science from Aquinas College and an MS (2009) and PhD (2015) in Geography from Michigan State University. He was awarded a Fulbright Hays Fellowship to study the relationship between gender and environment in Turkey (2014). Prior to returning to Michigan State University as an Assistant Professor in CIS, Dr. Baylis spent several years teaching at Delta State University in the Mississippi Delta and later at the University of Arkansas in Little Rock.  At MSU, he offers courses in Time, Space, and Change in Human Society, Social Inequality (via Critical Disaster Studies), and People and the Environment. His primary interests are in the relationship between identity and environment, specifically queer ecology, as well as the use of critical mapping approaches for storytelling purposes. With respect to the scholarship of teaching and learning, he is also interested in how students become intrinsically motivated as well as practical applications for ungrading in large classrooms.
